Description:
Judgments of a reactive and compulsive nature, both toward ourselves and toward others, are very strong in most of our lives. They can distort our perceptions, make relationships with others difficult, and undermine our work. We will examine what judgments are and how to work with them, using mindfulness, heart practices, and inquiry—preserving the discernment they can offer while working through their destructive aspects. We will also explore how we internalize the judgments of our society in a number of ways, particularly related to race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Attendees will have the option of regular follow-up sessions to continue and deepen the learning.

Continuing Education (CE) credit available:
This introductory-to-intermediate offers 5 Continuing Education (CE) credits/contact hours for $50. This program is applicable for licensed and license-eligible mental health and healthcare professionals, including, psychologists, MFTs, LCSWs, LEPs, LPCCs, nurses, chiropractors, and others seeking continuing education in mindfulness-based approaches to working with reactive judgment in and cultivating discernment in professional practice. Please review our Continuing Education information page for provider details, and to determine if your association or board will accept credits offered by Spirit Rock.

This program develops practitioners’ capacity to recognize and work with reactive judgment — a competency with direct implications for therapeutic alliance, diagnostic accuracy, and the quality of care provided. Through mindfulness practice, loving-kindness meditation, and inquiry, participants build skills for working with the judgmental mind, including judgments shaped by internalized societal attitudes related to race, gender, and sexual orientation. The practices introduced are widely applicable across psychology, nursing, social work, counseling, and marriage and family therapy, and participants are encouraged to draw their own professional applications from the learning.

Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program, you will be better able to:

  • Utilize mindfulness practice to identify the nature of reactive judgments and develop skill in working with them effectively, including practices applicable to professional interactions and client care.
  • Apply inquiry-based practices in a clinical setting to preserve the discernment found in judgment while working through its reactive and destructive forms.
  • Utilize loving-kindness practice as an antidote to distress arising from strong reactive judgment of self and others in professional contexts.
  • Identify reactive judgments conditioned by societal attitudes related to race, gender, and sexual orientation and their influence on personal and professional relationships.

Attendance policy for CE participants:
Complete, in-person attendance is required. Incomplete attendance nullifies CE eligibility as board regulations prohibit partial credit for partial attendance.

  • Sign in and out at the CE table, on time.
  • After the program, participants who meet the attendance requirements will be emailed a form to submit their professional information.  You will have 1 week to complete and submit this form to receive your Certificate of Attendance.
  • Certificates are issued only to those who fulfill the complete attendance requirements—without exception—to maintain compliance with our provider licenses and ensure the continuation of future CE programs.

Please note:

      • Please visit our Continuing Education information page for complete provider details and additional CE information, including attendance requirements and our cancellation and grievance policies.
      • If you hold a professional license that is not listed on our CE Information page, or if your license is issued by a board or professional association other than those listed, you are responsible for contacting your licensing board or association directly to request pre-approval or confirmation of acceptance of CE earned at Spirit Rock. Spirit Rock does not determine or guarantee CE applicability for licenses outside those listed.
      • Credit is awarded for instructional time only and does not include extended silent meditation, if offered.
      • Continuing Education is sponsored by Mindful CECs.
      • Mindful CECs is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Mindful CECs maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
