Description:
What do we do when we love someone and the relationship is still painful? Whether with a family member, partner, or dear friend, we can become caught in patterns that leave us hurt, confused, or unsure of how to respond.

In this daylong, we’ll investigate the guilt and uncertainty that can arise around setting boundaries, and the tension between caring for ourselves and caring for another. Drawing on the teachings of equanimity, impermanence, and discernment, we’ll explore how to respond wisely when the way forward is unclear. We’ll also examine how spiritual practice can become another source of pressure: the belief that we should be more accepting, more compassionate, or somehow be able to rise above our hurt.

Together, we’ll practice bringing spaciousness and patience to what cannot be easily healed or resolved, while also staying open to what may unfold over time.

Online Only: We are offering this program online via Zoom.

Continuing Education (CE) credit available:
This introductory-level program offers 4 Continuing Education (CE) credits/contact hours for $40.

This program is applicable for licensed and license-eligible mental health and health care professionals, including psychologists, social workers (LCSW, LSW), counselors (LPC, LCPC, LMHC), marriage and family therapists, nurses (RN, NP), and other health care professionals, seeking education in equanimity, non-attachment, and boundary-setting in difficult close relationships. Please review our Continuing Education information page for provider details, and to determine if your association or board will accept credits offered by Spirit Rock.

Clients often present with distress in relationships they value but cannot easily change, and guilt, anxiety, or uncertainty about setting limits can complicate treatment. Drawing on psychological research on equanimity, non-attachment, and constructs rooted in Buddhist psychology, this program offers clinicians a framework for understanding relational distress that cannot be readily resolved. Participants will examine how non-attachment differs from avoidance, resignation, or self-neglect, a distinction that can inform clinical conceptualization of clients’ boundary decisions.

Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program, participants will be better able to:

  • Describe equanimity and non-attachment, as constructs drawn from Buddhist psychology, and their potential relevance to guilt, anxiety, and uncertainty in interpersonal relationships, particularly those closest to us.
  • Explain how equanimity may support clients in tolerating relational distress that cannot be easily resolved.
  • Differentiate non-attachment from avoidance, a sense of resignation, or self-neglect when helping clients discern how to respond to difficulty in relationships and set boundaries.
