Program to be held on the land and online!
Description:
We are conditioned to measure ourselves against others and we often define ourselves through comparison. These movements of our mind are innocent, but they bind us to the pain of arrogance, self-hatred, and envy. The Buddha said this entire realm of comparison and measurement arises from suffering and compounds that suffering.
During our day of practice, we’ll explore the costs of measurement and the alternatives to it. In awareness, we become completely at ease with imperfection and relax the habits of measurement that we ordinarily use to substantiate ourselves and our stories. The “measureless” heart qualities—lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity—infuse the places of measurement with relaxation and love.
This retreat will include guided and silent meditation practice, Dharma reflections, and time for dialogue. All are welcome.

Teachings are appropriate for health care professionals as well as the general public. This program is relevant to healthcare providers, as it offers tools to reduce burnout and emotional fatigue by helping practitioners recognize and release patterns of self-comparison and judgment. By cultivating mindfulness and the qualities of compassion, joy, and equanimity, providers can foster greater emotional resilience and presence in their interactions with patients. Additionally, this approach enhances the ability to hold space for imperfection, both in themselves and others, ultimately supporting more compassionate and sustainable care delivery. When healthcare providers share these mindfulness and compassion-based practices with their patients or clients, it empowers individuals to cultivate self-compassion, reduce self-judgment, and manage stress more effectively. Patients can develop greater emotional resilience, which supports their overall well-being and promotes a more collaborative and healing therapeutic relationship. This shared practice fosters a holistic approach to health, where both provider and patient engage in mindful awareness and compassionate care.
Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program you will be better able to:
- Describe the psychological and emotional impacts of self-measurement and comparison, including the roles of arrogance, self-hatred, and envy, in perpetuating suffering as outlined in Buddhist teachings;
- Describe the role of awareness in reducing attachment to perfection and in cultivating acceptance of imperfection, promoting a more relaxed and compassionate attitude toward oneself and others;
- Assess how mindfulness practices can help practitioners become more attuned to the costs of measurement and utilize alternative ways of relating to themselves and their experiences;
- Apply mindfulness-based strategies to infuse compassion and relaxation into areas of self-measurement and comparison, thereby fostering emotional resilience and well-being.
