Description:
During this daylong retreat we will explore the nature of ego and the enormous stress that comes with trying to be “someone.” With Insight Meditation, we can make peace with our various self views. In sitting and walking meditation, supported by instructions and Dharma talks, we will cultivate embodied presence. We will use the healing tools of mindfulness and lovingkindness to meet the activity of self with balance and openness, perhaps even learning to love the “house that ego built.”

Online Only: We are offering this program online via Zoom.

Sliding Scale: Our sliding scale options for this program include financial support for our teachers. Please consider paying at the highest rate that you can afford: your generosity supports the teachers as well as Spirit Rock and your fellow practitioners who need to pay less.

Teachings are appropriate for health care professionals as well as the general public. This program is relevant to healthcare providers as it offers tools to manage the stress and pressure of their roles, by understanding and easing the burdens of ego. It introduces Insight Meditation, mindfulness, and lovingkindness practices to enhance self-awareness and self-compassion, which can improve emotional resilience and patient care. By learning effective self-soothing techniques, healthcare providers can decrease distress and, in turn, share these benefits with their patients and clients, fostering a more balanced, open approach that enhances overall patient care. Healthcare providers will also be able to share these tools and practices with their clients to help them manage their own stress, cultivate self-compassion, and enhance their overall well-being, leading to improved patient outcomes and a more supportive healthcare environment.

Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program, you will be better able to:

  • Define ego in a Buddhist context;
  • Explain common practices of self-soothing that may increase distress;
  • Describe self-soothing that may be used to decrease distress and bring reliable relief;
  • Utilize the practices of mindfulness and lovingkindness to increase self-awareness and cultivate self-compassion.
