Description:
Thich Nhat Hahn said that a strong emotion is like a storm that comes, stays a while, and passes. But with ongoing personal, social, and political dukkha, it may feel that the storm of strong emotions (such as fear, anger, anxiety and sadness) intrude throughout our meditation and into our day.

This program offers ways to refine our meditation—especially on days when the emotional turbulence of life makes it feel nearly impossible to meditate. Through science-backed strategies, we will calm the stress in our simmering nervous systems. We will gently tend to our emotions with a 7-step process to create a greater capacity to handle the charge of emotions and to tolerate and embody them. We will unfold our lotus heart with love, compassion, joy, and gratitude. By nourishing our inner harmony of body, mind, and heart, we will deepen our connection with ourselves as well as our loved ones, friends, coworkers, and communities.

Online Only: We are offering this program online via Zoom.

Sliding Scale: Our sliding scale options for this program include financial support for our teachers. Please consider paying at the highest rate that you can afford: your generosity supports the teachers as well as Spirit Rock and your fellow practitioners who need to pay less.

Teachings are appropriate for health care professionals as well as the general public. This program supports health care providers in meeting emotional overwhelm—both their own and that of those they serve—with greater skill, steadiness, and compassion. Grounded in the somatic teachings of Dr. Pawan Bareja and Dr. Raja Selvam, the practices offered help clinicians regulate their own nervous systems and increase embodied capacity to stay present with strong emotions. By cultivating this inner stability and resilience, care providers will be better equipped to model and guide clients through emotional challenges with greater sensitivity and attunement. As providers nourish their own hearts with compassion, joy, and gratitude, they can more fully show up in service—creating healing spaces rooted in presence, embodiment, and connection. In addition, they will gain practical tools to directly support clients in regulating the nervous system, embodying emotions, and accessing the heart as a resource for healing.

Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program, you will be better able to:

  • Describe three evidence-based techniques to regulate autonomic nervous system activity and reduce physiological stress responses.
  • Describe a structured, evidence-based approach to facilitate emotional embodiment and integration through somatic and interoceptive awareness techniques.
  • Demonstrate three contemplative heart-centered practices that enhance emotional well-being by promoting parasympathetic activation and improve emotional well-being.
  • Describe a mindfulness-based interoceptive awareness practice to support emotion regulation and increase tolerance of distressing internal states.
