Description:
Please join Phillip Moffitt online on Saturday, August 17th for this 21st annual offering of Poetry Day in which participants read the poems Phillip has selected. In this day of practice and poetry reading, Phillip will lead an exploration of the theme “The Unseen Threshold.”

Here’s a poem by Michael Ondaatje that captures the spirit of the theme of this daylong.

Bearhug

Griffin calls to come and kiss him goodnight
I yell ok. Finish something I’m doing,
then something else, walk slowly round
the corner to my son’s room.
He is standing arms outstretched
waiting for a bearhug. Grinning.

Why do I give my emotion an animal’s name,
give it that dark squeeze of death?
This is the hug which collects
all his small bones and his warm neck against me.
The thin tough body under the pyjamas
locks to me like a magnet of blood.

How long was he standing there
like that, before I came?

-Michael Ondaatje

In this daylong, our usual sitting and walking practices will be informed by periods of reading poetry to each other. Each poem is carefully chosen by Phillip with an eye toward selections that point us to Dharma insights. This is a day of fun and lightheartedness, and if you haven’t ever read a poem in front of others, don’t miss this opportunity to free your voice and find a new form of expression.
