Description:
What lessons can we learn from the insights neuroscientists have gained from studying Buddhist monastics and lay practitioners? How does science support Buddhist practice, and when does it become a hindrance? What are the perils, pitfalls, and promises of contemplative science? Join us for an exciting series of conversations with renowned neuroscientists Clifford Saron, PhD, Amishi Jha, PhD, and Brian Dias, PhD interviewed by Nikki Mirghafori, PhD, who serves on the Spirit Rock Board of Directors and Teachers Council. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the Q/A after each dialogue.

Feb. 6 Session Details:
Perils, Pitfalls, and Promise of Contemplative Science
Clifford Saron, PhD
What are some lessons learned from conducting research with Tibetan monks in India? Can brain signals predict behavior, and if so, what are the implications for free will? What are the effects of intensive meditation on attention, emotional responses to suffering, markers of cellular aging, and positive psychological traits? What are the challenges of communicating the nuance and uncertainty inherent in science?

March 6 Session Details:
Strengthening Attention with Mindfulness Training
Amishi Jha, PhD
Should there be a minimum dose of mindfulness practice offered to the time-pressured? How can contemplative practice serve those in high demand professions, such as first-responders, medical professionals, and military service members?

April 3 Session Details:
Lessons Learned by a Neuroscientist from Tibetan Buddhist Monastics
Brian Dias, PhD
What is the relationship between karma and intergenerational legacies of ancestral experience? Why does it become challenging to unify around a definition of consciousness? What are similarities and differences between scientific and Tibetan Buddhist debate?

All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

*Recording Note: If you would like access to the recording, you must register by the deadline above. You will have ~90 days from the original program date to view the recording of this program.
