Retreat Description: This retreat is for those who are currently facilitating or plan to be facilitating mindfulness, or for clinicians using mindfulness in therapeutic interventions. Cosponsored by UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center. Cosponsored by UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, this retreat is for those who are currently facilitating or plan to be facilitating mindfulness, or for clinicians using mindfulness in therapeutic interventions. For those who currently facilitate or plan to facilitate mindfulness, this unique retreat will offer an experiential understanding of mindfulness practice through retreat format as well as tools, exploration, guidance and support around facilitation. On this retreat you will: deepen your understanding of mindfulness meditation in an intensive retreat format; refine your capacity to facilitate mindfulness meditation and its related disciplines; study issues and themes relevant to facilitation such as diversity presence and embodiment; understand latest scientific research on mindfulness and its efficacy; and enjoy a rich community of like-minded mindfulness practitioners and facilitators. During this mostly silent Insight Meditation retreat, we will contextualize contemporary mindfulness approaches within the Buddhist tradition. The teachers will be assisted on this retreat by Sara Schedler. Teachings are appropriate for all, including health care professionals. Continuing Education (CE) credit available. See below for more information. Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals- Based on the content of this workshop, health care professionals will be able to:
- Incorporate mindfulness meditation and its related disciplines in ways useful for clients;
- Describe issues and themes relevant to facilitation such as diversity, presence and embodiment;
- Utilize latest scientific research on mindfulness and its efficacy when working with clients and patients;
- Apply Buddhist perspectives and practices to steady the mind and open the heart;
- Use emotional self-regulation through the practice of mindfulness through various exercises and meditations;
- Apply the principles of equanimity and compassion for meeting stress, pain and burnout with kindness and wisdom;
- Apply mindfulness principles and practices to working with others in a clinical setting and other environments;
- Describe how habitual reactions lead to chronic stress;
- Practice mindfulness techniques to break the habitual reaction and hence reduce stress;
- Describe the role of mindfulness in helping patients;
- Demonstrate how mindfulness can be incorporated into the workday to reduce stress;
- Describe how mindfulness will help interactions and communications with patients, colleagues, and clients;
- Demonstrate methodology and tools for embodying mindfulness while facilitating others;
- Practice teaching, giving, and receiving feedback for basic introductory mindfulness meditations;
- Describe basic group facilitation concerns and incorporate mindfulness based solutions when working with clients;
- Demonstrate how self awareness supports the development of empathy;
- Apply the practice of kindness to others in a clinical setting;
- Demonstrate how self awareness supports the development of empathy;
- Apply the practice of kindness to others in a clinical setting.
