“A benefit retreat for Spirit Rock and The Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School If you have received notice that your application for this retreat has been accepted, please confirm your participation by registering below. This retreat – only the second of its kind in North America – is specifically for clinicians, researchers and educators engaged in MBSR, MBCT or other mindfulness-based interventions in the fields of health care, education, the law, and similar disciplines. It is an invitation to extend and deepen one’s personal experience of mindfulness meditation, via intensive practice, together with peers and colleagues, within a supportive and harmonious environment of noble silence conducive to the unfolding of greater wisdom and compassion. As taught by the Buddha, the retreat will emphasize the roots of mindfulness and the four foundations of mindfulness – through sustained practice, daily talks, meditation instructions, and interviews with the teachers. The course will be conducted primarily in silence, with a full daily schedule of sitting and walking practice, as well as periods of lying down meditation, and mindful hatha yoga. In the latter days of the retreat there will be opportunities for group dialogue on the ways those practicing, teaching and researching mindfulness-based approaches (primarily MBSR and MBCT) can further integrate the practice into their personal and professional lives. The retreat is offered as a benefit to support the missions of both Spirit Rock and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA. Both organizations seek to bring greater peace and happiness into the world. The fee is $1,600 for residents and $1,180 for commuters with payment in full due on registration. Please note that this amount covers accommodations and meals only. As is customary at many insight meditation centers, the teachings of mindfulness are freely offered by the retreat teachers, who do not receive a salary or percentage of the fee. Instead, participants will have the opportunity at the end of the retreat to make a contribution in support of the teachers (excluding Jon Kabat-Zinn, who is donating his time). A substantial portion ($900) of the $1,600 fee for residents and $665 of the $1,180 for commuters is tax deductible as a charitable donation. Please note that continuing education credits are not available. Scholarships A modest number of partial scholarships are available by application. Since it is not possible to register online at the scholarship rate for this retreat, you will need to contact us if you would like to apply. Please email MBSR@spiritrock.org or call Irene McGill at 415.488.0164 ext 225. Cancellations For any cancellations before November 12, 2009, there is a $300 cancellation fee. For cancellations after this date, the full fee is forfeited; there will be no refund. Exceptions to this apply for family or medical emergencies.”
